Episode 121: Dr Brad Evans (CSIRO) - Part 1

Craig's interview guest in this episode is Dr Brad Evans, who is a Senior Research Scientist in the Breeding and Genomics Research Group at CSIRO in Hobart.  Before joining CSIRO in early 2023, Brad spent 18 years working in the field of applied selective breeding in aquaculture, including assisting in designing and implementing selective breeding programs for various species including pearl oysters, prawns, Sydney Rock Oysters and Tasmanian Atlantic Salmon. Quoting from Brad's on-line profile, he "strived to communicate the benefits of breeding to each industry, and ensured that selective breeding has been incorporated as an essential operational aspect of each industry rather than being considered as a research project”. And he “continues to work towards a better understanding of what makes aquaculture industries sustainable and profitable.”  This Part 1 includes Brad talking of his BSc. Honours project on the genetics of the Northern Pacific Seastar, his PhD on developing genetic markers for abalone research, and his work that followed in Indonesia around selective breeding of pearl oysters. Part 2 of Brad's interview will feature in the next episode of Vibes Under The Sea.
