Episode 122: Dr Brad Evans (CSIRO) - Part 2

In this episode we hear Part 2 of Craig's interview with Dr Brad Evans, who is a Senior Research Scientist in the Breeding and Genomics Research Group at CSIRO and based in Hobart.  Before joining CSIRO in early 2023, Brad had spent 18 years working in the field of applied selective breeding in aquaculture, including assisting in designing and implementing selective breeding programs for abalone, pearl oysters, prawns, and the Sydney Rock oyster. A next phase of Brad’s career saw him move, after several years working in the tropics, back to Tasmania and working in the breeding programs for farmed Atlantic Salmon.  Brad talks engagingly about those years of being a scientist working within industry and with comparisons to now, working outside of industry, but with the outcomes of his work and that of his research group directly feeding into and benefiting the commercial sector. The last third of the episode sees Craig reading a recently published article (a media release) from the Australian Institute of Marine Science on the 2024/25 marine heatwave and the most extensive coral bleaching and mortality across Western Australia's coral reefs to date.
