Episode 126: Dr Tyson Jones (IMAS) - Part 2
This episode features Part 2 of Craig's interview with Dr Tyson Jones, a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the Reef Repair Hub of the Ecology and Biodiversity Centre at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), University of Tasmania. Tyson’s research specialities have included exploring nocturnal reef ecology across both temperate and tropical reefs; identifying biases and limitations which inhibit sampling methodologies from accurately recording the full spectrum of fish species present on reefs. Picking up from where Part 1 concluded, we first hear Tyson relate, very entertainingly, his 'saga' of a road trip down from the Sunshine Coast to Hobart in early 2021, with his partner and his dog, prior to starting his PhD. And then he talks of his PhD's objectives and findings; about the importance of including nocturnal surveys in reef community assessments, but also relating the challenges that come with night diving. We also hear about Tyson's current postdoctoral research in a large, government funded, multi-collaborator program, aimed at restoring giant kelp forests in Tasmanian waters.
